Vascular branching in the chick embryo yolk sac. The vascularised membranes of the chick embryo include the area vasculosa which is subdivided into 2 concentric zones, the inner transparent area pellucida vasculosa and the surrounding, less transparent area opaca vasculosa, corresponding to the yolk sac which is peripherally limited by the sinus terminalis. Two main mechanisms seem to be implicated in the growth of the area vasculosa: the release of collaterals from vessels measuring between 1 and 2 mm and the lengthening of 2-7 mm vessels.
