The Dictyostelium model system

The social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum lives as solitary cells in the soil. Under starvation conditions cells aggregate to form a multicellular structure, which goes through different stages of development in a 24 h period. The picture shows an initial mound-like structure of approximately 100,000 cells, and the final stage, the fruiting body, formed by a stalk of vacuolated cells and a ball of spores on top.
