FGF (fibroblast growth factor) signalling between the limb bud mesenchyme and the apical ectodermal ridge (AER) is critical for limb patterning and growth. The AER is a specialized epithelium running around the tip of the limb bud and, as the cover picture shows, a gene encoding Flrt3 (fibronectin-leucine-rich transmembrane protein 3) is strongly expressed here and outlines the limb bud of stage HH20 chick embryos. Flrt3 has been suggested to regulate FGF signalling by physically interacting with FGF receptors and enhancing downstream signalling.
