Cover Legend

Photograph of metamorphosis of Aurelia aurita (Scyphozoa, Cnidaria), where the sessile polyp transforms into several free floating medusae. Metamorphosis starts at the apical pole of the animal, the polypÎs head, by segmentation into repetitive constrictions and proceeds down the body column. One segment develops into one medusa. From the basal to the apical end the photograph shows a developmental gradient, where formation of constrictions precedes the development of young medusae. Note that only the head of the former polyp is still under reorganisation into a medusa.
For details see "Induction of segmentation in polyps of Aurelia aurita (Scyphozoa, Cnidaria) into medusae and formation of mirror-image medusa anlagen" by Kroiher et al. in this issue pp. 485-490.
