Cover Legend

A frontal section of a female mouse embryo 7.5 days after fertilization stained for b-galactosidase (b-gal) encoded by E.coli lacZ transgene (HMG-lacZ) on the maternally derived X chromosome. The embryonic ectoderm and mesodermal tissues are mosaic for cell expressing and those not expressing b-gal due to random X chromosome inactivation. Almost all cells of the extraembryonic ectoderm are positive for b-gal because of imprinted inactivation of the paternally derived X chromosome. For details see "X chromosome inactivation revealed by the X-linked lacZ transgene activity in periimplantation mouse embryos" by M. Sugimoto et al., in this issue.
