Cover Legend

In situ hybridization detection of hsp90a mRNA in developing fast muscle fibers of a 24 hour old zebrafish embryo. Strong expression of the gene begins shortly after the dorsal and ventral blocks of fast muscle begin to form within the somite but ceases by 48 h of age as these fibers mature. The two populations of slow muscle fibers, one of which separates the blocks of fast muscle at the dorsal-ventral midline and the other which forms a narrow layer at the periphery of the somite, differentiate earlier and have downregulated hsp90a expression at this point in development. For details see "Restricted expression of the zebrafish hsp90a gene in slow and fast muscle fiber lineages" by J.B. Sass et al., in this issue.
