The midkine (Mdk) protein is known to play important roles in neurogenesis. The gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) version of this protein, known as CagMdkb has been cloned and characterized. Gibel carp embryos injected with wild type CagMdkb RNAs exhibit severe deficiencies including a reduction in the forebrain region and eye structure. These findings, together with others reported in the present paper indicate that CagMdkb plays an important role in fish neural development and head formation.
