The Regression Model (upper panel): the presumptive head region is specified first at the onset of gastrulation and then axial mesoderm is formed toward posterior. The Progression Model (lower panel): the chordamesoderm is progressively formed toward anterior and the head rudiment is specified at mid to late gastrulation stage.
